I don’t know about you and I don’t know about the general populace, but our family has more birthdays in May than any other month. Likely, my sister had an anniversary in May but she is now divorced and so that eliminates one card. I’m not counting first-cousins once removed and second cousins and there are at least three of them.

I have birthdays for one nephew, a niece (wife of the nephew), an ex-husband, two friends, one great-niece and one great nephew. Then there’s Mother’s Day. Also my mother’s birthday was the same day as my nephew-in-law’s. My ex-husband and one friend (my cousin’s ex-wife) have the same birthday.

Most of these birthdays also require a gift from the dear aunt, so that means writing checks to nieces, nephews, and the parents of the great-niece and great-nephew.

What is it about May that would cause such a rash of birthdays? The large number I have to remember in August make sense. November is getting colder and the the days are getting shorter and people have to find things to be doing besides watching reruns on television.

But making babies in September? People are going back to school and have new classes and lots to do. Why are people making so many babies in September? There are lots of other things to do in September. The weather is getting nice, people are establishing routines for the school year and the fall. In other words, there are other things to do other than make babies.

I live from 1,000 to 2,000 from all these May birthday babies which means that I spend about $3.00 per card and 40-something cents for each stamp. It also means I have to guess how long it will take the United States Postal Services to deliver the card in time for the birthdays. That actually requires calculus, I think, because I can never figure out the length of time of the travel for the card.

It can get a little expensive to deal with all these May birthdays, as well as taxing on the brain to remember the dates and calculate when to send the cards. I usually write all the cards at the beginning of the month and send them as the time draws near. It helps in not forgetting one of the birthdays.

I’ll be glad when May is over.
